Judge Brett Kavanaugh may be well on his way to becoming Justice Kavanaugh within a couple of days. The months’ long debate over whether the Appeals Court Judge for the District of Columbia will get to sit on the highest court in the land or not has been heated one. Especially when multiple allegations surfaced that linked Kavanaugh to a number of sexual misconduct instances that he allegedly committed. Most of these cases are from the 1980’s, Kavanaugh’s High School and College years.
Allegations against Judge Brett Kavanaugh: Where is the Corroboration?
Judge Brett Kavanaugh may be well on his way to becoming Justice Kavanaugh within a couple of days. The months’ long debate over whether the Appeals Court Judge for the District of Columbia will get to sit on the highest court in the land or not has been heated one. Especially when multiple allegations surfaced that linked Kavanaugh to a number of sexual misconduct instances that he allegedly committed. Most of these cases are from the 1980’s, Kavanaugh’s High School and College years. Even his former college roommate has come out publicly and criticized the judge’s drinking habits during those years. Potentially citing this as the detonating factor to the alleged sexual misconduct. None of the cases were taken up with authorities at the time. Therefore there are no public records to fall back upon. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said this Thursday;
“I’ve now received a committee staff briefing on the FBI’s supplement to Judge Kavanaugh’s background investigation file. There’s nothing in it that we didn’t already know,”
Still, these allegations put Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s personal life in the public eye during a trial in which he was constantly harassed and humiliated. Over situations that he has categorically denied! The accusers have failed to produce any credible evidence to prove that these allegations may be true. That hasn’t stopped multiple groups from organizing massive protests against President Trump’s nominee. Who are the people accusing Kavanaugh and what exactly do they say he did?
Kavanaugh’s Accusers; Who are They?
At the time of writing, we know of three women that have publicly accused judge Kavanaugh of some form of sexual misconduct. Christine Blasey Ford claims that Kavanaugh assaulted her in High School. While Deborah Ramirez and Julie Swetnick claimed that Kavanaugh exhibited an inappropriate behavior towards them in college. There is also a fourth woman who allegedly sent a letter to a senator detailing an accusation from an incident in 1998. This last accusation is still quite vague as major details have not been released.
Only Christine Ford testified publically before the Senate Judiciary Committee and told her story. Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s former roommate, James Roche, has spoken to multiple news outlets about the heavy drinking habits that Brett had developed during his college years. His story, however, did not reach the Senate Committee. Despite the fact that multiple democrat representatives are pushing to have the vote moved back so that the F.B.I. has more time to investigate it seems that won’t happen.
Statements Before The Senate Committee
Christine Blasey Ford has by far the most disturbing story amongst the 3 public accusers. She claims that while at a party in Bethesda, Maryland in the early eighties a drunk Kavanaugh pinned her up against a wall covered her mouth with his hand and groped her against her will, while one of Kavanaugh’s friends watched. That friend was Mark Judge who is now a conservative writer. The judge has already declared he recalls no such incident involving Kavanaugh and any girl at that time. The Post, the paper that first ran Ford’s story, claims that they corroborated the story with a number of people, a lie-detector test from her lawyer, and several notes from past therapy sessions that Ford attended to cope with the rape attempt! Yet, the F.B.I. who by President Trump’s account has run background checks on Kavanaugh 7 times has found no evidence to corroborate these claims. Earlier this week the president tweeted:
“This is now the 7th. time the FBI has investigated Judge Kavanaugh,” President Trump later tweeted. “If we made it 100, it would still not be good enough for the Obstructionist Democrats.” making his position on the Kavanaugh investigation clear yet again!
The other accuser was Deborah Ramirez. She claimed that Kavanaugh “exposed” himself to her during a party that took place within the 1983-1984 school year at Yale. Ramirez admits to being intoxicated at the time. Yet she claims that she remembers a student yelling, “Brett Kavanaugh just put his penis in Debbie’s face.” during the incident. Kavanaugh continually denied the claims and called the hearing a “circus”. That circus though could heavily influence the upcoming elections.
The Kavanaugh Effect on the Elections
As strange is it may seem the Kavanaugh situation could have a positive effect on potential voters on both sides. For the Democrats being able to publicly “expose” a conservative figure and have protesters in the street could work wonders for voter turnout. Historically voter participation is significantly low during midterm elections and that is going to be an issue for the Democrats hopes of retaking the house. Also, this new wave of protests has sparked the public outcry for impeachment. A great compliment to any liberal campaign these days!
On the Republican side, it may also bring many conservatives that did not agree with the Trump agenda back. Conservatives are usually more concerned with having a majority in the Supreme Court than liberals are. A majority in the Supreme Court is the conservative hope of reversing verdicts like Roe v Wade! That is potentially a bigger concern for conservatives than even who is sitting in the White House. Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell has been behind the Kavanaugh campaign so to speak. Major polls indicate that a lot of people were bothered by the way Kavanaugh’s life was exposed in court conservatives could also ride that wave into November.
Confirmation Will be a Photo Finish
The votes are yet to come in, but as we said despite the controversy it looks like we may be calling Judge Brett Kavanaugh, Justice Kavanaugh by the end of the week! Many news outlets are leaning towards giving Kavanaugh the edge. In the last few hours multiple, Republican senators have publically announced their intention to vote in favor of the nominee. With the F.B.I. unable to provide enough evidence to delay the voting date at this despite it looks like the Republican majority of 51 senators will sit Kavanaugh in the highest court in the land. This vote will not only shape the course of America’s highest court for a generation, but it can potentially become the downfall in credibility for an institution like the F.B.I. The fact that they ultimately could not confirm or deny the allegations against Kavanaugh could weigh heavy on an organization already going through tough times as it is!
